Task 3 - Research into a marketing package for an artist (video, digipak, posters, TV ads, magazine ads)

The artist that I have decided to research is Adele's latest album "25"

The Daily Mail has posted a 30 second teaser of Adele's song "Hello" which is included in the Album and it is the first song on her album and the first song that she released from her album.

Because Adele fans have been waiting for a couple of years for her album, this song came as a surprise to fans, which already, immediately sells the album because she is a very popular singer.

This is the Digipak that Adele uses, this can help market it because it has the title therefore people know that this is her new album and they will buy it.

The front album cover looks very similar to the Digipak, the back of the album cover has a different picture of Adele and a list of songs on her album this also sells the album because it gives fans in a way a sneak peak of what each song is about and they would be curious to know so they would buy it.

This is her album poster, again it looks similar to the album cover and digipak cover, but this will help sell the album because it is not giving away too much, this can help sell the album beacause fans would be curious and buy it.

Theorists

Adorno and Hebdige

 Adorno

  • Believes capitalists creates video to creates video to create false needs, we need false needs
  • With false needs we make our own decisions - things that don't really matter but we feel like it does for example X- Factor .
Hebdige

  • opposite of Adorno
  • People interperate Music Videos differently
  • Effects how people consume music in the future
  • Subcultures , we make our own decisions on how we consume music
 Dyer
  • Stars have some key features, an image and not a real person
  • Image constructed by advertising, TVs, Magazines
  • Star image  made by paradoxes, 1st star is ordinary and extraordinary,
  • ordinary  is daily tasks like shopping and driving, doing normal people activities.
  • Extraordinary is just them being a star like going live on stage advertising etc
  • 2nd consumer thinks they know the star well but they don't physically know them or know what happens behind the scenes.
  • Stars depend on subsudiary media for example Tv and radio to construct image of themselves

Negus

  • 2 different types of ideologies of creativity, The Organic ideology and the Synthetic Ideology
Organic
  • A naturalistic approach to artists
  • The image is enhanced by the the record company
  • The artist is given time to evolve and progress through their career
  • Emphasis on album sales and the consruction of it being successful

Synthetic

  • Emphasis is given to the single sales and to promoting first albums (One hit wonders)
  • a combinatorial approach to artists and material
  •  The image of the artist is constructed by the record company
  • The artist is given short time to prove their success before other combinations will be tried out

Boom video

  •  Have a interseting idea, good story with a lot of visuals.
  • To always create a storyboard, to help create the music video.
  • Preparation is key to be well prepared to create a music video
  • Location needs to be interesting, graphically interesting.
  • The shoot-  need a wide range of different shots long shots, experiment with different angles as it will make the music video interesting.
  • Perfomance- to make the video interesting, make eye contact with camera.
  • Log everything in the tape and rename scenes to help with editing.

Task 2 - analysing other student's work 2

I am going to be analyzing another student's coursework, this is by Harley Lough and she did a music video in 2012 and it is the song "Run The World" by Beyoncé.

The strengths with this music video is that I really liked the fact that she had a group of people making their own choreography and that it is totally different to the original music video I thought that was very creative of her, I also liked the use of different outfits/ costumes I thought all the outfits looked really nice and that it went well with the video because the original music video does something similar. I also liked the use of different locations I liked the tunnel that they were dancing in I thought that it gave the effect that it is a real music video I also liked the stage they were dancing on with the theatrical lights and I liked the field and the wind because it matches the original music video and it all goes with their costumes.

Again it was difficult to pick out some weaknesses as this music video was  made well, however I am a big fan of the twitch effect of the screen but this person used too much of that effect and I think that if you use it too much you'll get a headache. I didn't really like the fire effect I thought that it looks too fake and I don't think it was very necessary I thought the video would still look really good without the effect.

Task 2 - analysing other student's work

I am going to be analyzing A2 coursework from 2013 this is by Tyler West, Jeffery Sasu, Jordan Edwards and Jorgenson Paragas. They're music video had the song "Can't Hold Us Down" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

The strengths in their music video is that they have added additional sound effects for example the phone ringing, the person speaking on the phone, I also like how their music video shows a story, I also think the use of different locations was really good, their outfits looked professional for example the thieves outfits and the props just went really well with the music video, I also like how they paused the song at 3:12 and used another song (Get Hyper by KSI) and then went back to the Macklemore song, I thought that it made the music video more entertaining, I also liked how they had cartoon effects this just made the video look so professional and that this kind of helped us understand the story of the music video.

It is really difficult for me to point out weaknesses in this music video because I personally think that it was made really well, however  towards the end of the song where the people were lip syncing to the song , they were not really in sync with the music.

Prelim task

  • Task outline and real video:
I am working in a group of 3 with Irena and Kai we have decided to re-create a minute of the music video Knock you down by Keri Hilson ft Kanye West and Ne-Yo.

  • Planning
Storyboard
The storyboard that I created...

  • Filming
We used the school's studio to film, the studio has a black background which is good for us because we need a plain background in our video. We spent about 4 hours filming, we tried our best to wear similar outfits to the music video,
  • Editing
We would decrease the size of the original music video and place it in the corner of the screen so that you can see the original music video with our version of the music video.

There is a rocket, letter on fire and a hourglass and smoke that is in the music video which is a bit difficult to re create so we decided to draw them and create a fade in and out effect.
There are a lot of split screens in the original music video and we have done our best to re create that in our editing.
There are also a few black and white scenes that we also recreated in our editing.
  • Final Product

  • Your Contribution
My contribution to this task is playing the role of Keri Hilson in the music video, I also contributed with the editing by helping out in cropping some shots to create the split screen and also by adding black and white filters on some shots as well.
  • Evaluation
We tried our best to replicate the original music video and I think we did well with that. This was useful because I learnt how to use different tools on Adobe Premiere Pro for example the cropping tool to create split screens. The different lightings as well because we had a lot of lights in the studio that we could use. Whilst editing we found it difficult to replicate the spaceship, smoke and letter scene so we decided that we would draw it and use fade in and out effects.
